Sharon Weiner and her husband, owner of Kona Ice Central Gaithersburg, is featured in The Maryland Community Gazette! They were looking for ways to stay busy upon retirement and they spotted their true calling one day as the Kona Ice truck drove by. Sharon, 64, and her son Alan have been running the daily operations in the Montgomery Village, Gaithersburg, and Rockville areas since July. Grandma Kona is Sharon’s very-fitting nickname from her younger customers. She just loves seeing their smiling faces as she serves them a perfect Kona!
“I say it’s the greatest job next to working at Disney,” she said. “Everybody is happy when they come to the truck.”
Grandma Kona truly was sold to the business when she learned that a main pillar of the Kona Ice family is giving back to communities across the nation. Sharon generally gives back about 20 percent of sales and has already worked with Watkins Mill High School and Church of the Redeemer in Gaithersburg.
Something that makes Sharon very unique to the business is she sought this franchise as an opportunity for her grandchildren to have a steady summer job where they are able to learn for their possible future in the business.
“I figured if my son and I could create an opportunity like this, my grandchildren can have a summer job in the future or if they want they can continue on with the Kona truck,” Weiner said. “I want to keep it as a family-owned business.”
